Winter is Here, Tips for Driving in Winter Conditions

Winter has come in full force and with it, winter road conditions. Check out our tips for driving safely in harsh conditions.

  1. Check road conditions BEFORE you get on the road! Check to see if any roads are closed, what alternate routes are available, and conditions (are the roads wet, icy, slushy, snowy, etc). Use the WYDOT Travel Information website - https://www.wyoroad.info/Index.html.

  2. Drive slowly! Expect travel to take longer in winter conditions and plan ahead to give yourself extra time. Accelerate and decelerate SLOWLY as well. Applying the gas slowly to accelerate is the best method for retaining traction and avoiding slides. Give yourself extra time to slowdown, it can be dangerous to stomp on the brakes and can cause your vehicle to slide and brakes to lock.

  3. Give yourself extra distance between the car in front of you. Extra distance between the car in front of you gives you extra time to slow down or stop if needed!

  4. If its too dangerous, STAY HOME! After checking road conditions, if the weather or conditions are too dangerous, its best to not go or delay your trip. Stay home and catch up on those Netflix shows you’ve been meaning to binge!
