Washing Your Car in the Winter??

For some, washing their cars in the winter may not be a priority or may not make sense. In those freezing months we’ve all come to love (or hate) in Wyoming and Montana, we aren’t driving through mud, or over dusty roads (they’re covered in snow and ice!), so why should we wash our cars regularly or even MORE in the winter?

Washing your car in the winter is actually very important for good maintenance for a few reasons.

During winter months, the Wyoming and Montana Department of Transportation work hard to keep roads clear and plowed. They do this in part by using different chemical treatments to help clear ice and snow. These chemical treatments are often applied before and after snowstorms and include things like salt sand or traction sand, salt brine, magnesium chloride, sodium chloride and ice slicer.

A build up of salt on your vehicle can lead to rust and corrosion, damaging the undercarriage and potentially damaging your vehicle’s clear coat finish.

Chlorides (along with slush and dirt from the roads) can splash onto your car and build up over time, leaving a filmy residue on your car. The Montana Department of Transportation actually recommends you wash your car on a regular basis.
